CAPEMISA cuts regulatory reporting from 10 days to a single overnight run—and automates 90%+ of its business with Control‑M

Industry Insurance

Executive summary

CAPEMISA, a Brazilian insurer and capitalization provider, needed to modernize manual, error-prone processes that consumed entire teams and jeopardized regulatory deadlines. With Control-M orchestrating workflows across several disconnected systems, the company automated regulatory reporting, billing, integrations, and cash payments to winners of CAPEMISA-backed promotions (prize draw payments). Reporting cycles that once took 10 days now finish in a single overnight run, high-cost operations became profitable, and skilled staff shifted from routine tasks to revenue-generating initiatives.

Company overview

CAPEMISA is a Brazilian insurance and capitalization company. The company operates in a highly regulated market where timely reporting, reliable processing, and operational control are essential to serving customers and partners. Over the past six decades, the company has evolved from savings and pension products into a modern insurer operating alongside a capitalization business.

Today, CAPEMISA runs both insurance and capitalization operations on shared infrastructure, with a lean team supporting a broad portfolio: individual and group life insurance, pension products, financial lending, and capitalization products marketed and distributed through partners. The company serves thousands of customers across its lines of business.

Operating in a heavily regulated market means answering to SUSEP, Brazil's insurance regulator, which demands detailed financial and legal reporting every month. As those requirements grew more complex, CAPEMISA needed a way to keep pace without drowning in manual work.

The challenge

CAPEMISA’s automation journey began during a major technology transition, as the company moved to distributed platforms and confronted the limits of manual operations. Critical overnight workflows relied on manual tracking and handoffs, with little visibility, limited logs, and few safeguards if something ran out of sequence.

The risks were real. A single missed step during testing could allow untested changes to move into production. There was no reliable way to document what ran, when, or in what order.

The pain was sharpest around regulatory reporting. Each month, generating the mandatory reports for SUSEP (known internally as official records, or ROs) consumed the first 10 days of the month.

"Basically, for 10 days the company was at a standstill, just pulling information for SUSEP," explains Carlos Eduardo Martins Cavalleiro, who helped lead the Control-M implementation. Teams manually extracted data from multiple systems, consolidated it, and passed it to accounting for reporting. Staff routinely worked into the early morning hours just to submit the final report on the tenth day.

Billing was equally painful. Generating a single invoice could take five or six days, leading to frustrated customers chasing payments for invoices that hadn't been produced yet. And in the capitalization business, tightening regulations made low-value prize draws economically unviable under manual operations, closing off a promising revenue stream.

The solution

CAPEMISA implemented Control-M to orchestrate and manage business-critical workflows and, just as importantly, create the visibility and auditability the company needed. What began as an automation platform for scheduled processing gradually became the backbone of the entire operation.

The turning point came when a new IT director demonstrated Control-M's full potential and tied it directly to business goals—most notably, making the capitalization business viable and modernizing regulatory reporting.

Two priorities converged. First, CAPEMISA automated its SUSEP reporting workflow end to end. Control-M coordinates the ingestion of source files, execution of calculations, and consolidation of outputs, eliminating the manual handoffs that previously slowed down reporting.

Second, the company used Control-M to slash the operating cost of prize draw payments. By automating the data-heavy registration, verification, and payment steps, CAPEMISA could profitably run the low-value draws that competitors had abandoned—winning new clients in the process.

Over time, Control-M became the single orchestration layer across CAPEMISA's fragmented systems. Because no single application covers insurance, pensions, lending, and capitalization, the company needed a reliable way to coordinate work across systems.

"Practically all my processes run in Control-M. I don't have another automation tool," says Cavalleiro. Control-M orchestrates billing for both companies, moves data in and out of SAP, splits incoming bank files across multiple business lines, and coordinates external partner file exchanges through managed file transfer, all with full logging and no manual intervention.

Today, development teams design new solutions with Control-M in mind from the start. "Everything new goes into Control-M," Cavalleiro notes. The platform isn't an afterthought bolted onto finished systems; it's part of the solution itself.

The results

The impact is measurable across every corner of the business:

  • Regulatory reporting: from 10 days to 1 overnight run. The first time CAPEMISA ran the automated process, the company closed the month on the 31st, processed overnight, and had every report ready for submission on the first morning of the new month. "It was a landmark for the company," says Cavalleiro. Today, fiscal data is delivered before the fifth of the month, without pulling in dozens of staff.
  • Prize-draw payment processing: from about 8 hours to roughly 20 minutes.. Full end-to-end orchestration compressed a multi-hour job into minutes, making high-volume, low-margin draws profitable.
  • Payments in 24 hours. Winners drawn on Sunday see funds in their account by Monday. Around 90 to 95 percent of prize payments now clear within one business day —meeting a leadership target that started at 48 hours and was later cut in half.
  • Billing: from 5 or 6 days to a single overnight run, eliminating the invoice delays that once frustrated customers.
  • 90%+ of the business orchestrated by Control-M, an improvement from the manual processes that were handled through disconnected tools.

Just as important, automation freed people to create value instead of chasing data. Four IT staff once dedicated to generating monthly reports were redeployed to new business initiatives.

"Instead of spending money to generate information, we're now using these people to generate money for the company," Cavalleiro explains. Rather than using automation to reduce headcount, CAPEMISA expanded the team by 30 to 50 percent as freed-up talent moved onto new products and higher-value work.

Control-M also strengthened operational control and trust. By removing manual handling from payment files, the company reduced opportunities for tampering, while detailed logs settled any disputes with partners. When one partner claimed a payment file had been sent on time, CAPEMISA's file-transfer logs showed the file arrived empty until a later timestamp, resolving the issue on the spot.

"I can't even imagine using another tool," says Cavalleiro. "Everything I've needed, you've solved my problems."

Looking ahead

For CAPEMISA, Control-M has become far more than an automation tool—it's the operational foundation that makes the business possible. It turned a 10-day reporting ordeal into an overnight routine, made once-unviable products profitable, and freed skilled staff to focus on growth rather than repetitive tasks.

Looking ahead, CAPEMISA is preparing to migrate to the latest Control-M version, expand into Control-M SaaS as part of its broader cloud strategy, and explore AI-driven capabilities to keep raising the bar on efficiency and self-service. The company's philosophy remains consistent: automate the routine and give people space to innovate.
