Sebastian Pacheco, Technology Manager at Tenaris, leads a team responsible for defining and managing technology strategy globally, providing second- and third-level support for the regions, including subsidiaries like TenarisTamsa in Mexico and TenarisDalmine in Italy.

"We're responsible for defining technology globally for Tenaris across the entire infrastructure," says Pacheco. "Keeping the service available 24/7 is extremely important for the company."

The Challenge

What sets Tenaris apart from most enterprises is the scope of its operations. Beyond SAP, payroll, human resources, and supply chain, the company runs its entire industrial system through workflow orchestration, connecting corporate systems directly to plant operations.

In the early days, batch processing was heavily manual, tied to cron jobs and operating system scheduling tasks. As the company grew, added systems, and expanded across platforms like, Tandem, Unix, and Windows, that approach couldn't keep up.

"There was limited visibility," says Pacheco. "As it grew, more systems were added, more areas were added, and the company expanded. That created the need for a product that would let us have visibility, management, and control over that process."

The stakes were high.

• Payroll chains pay salaries on strict weekly and biweekly cycles, and a failure could create disputes with unions and delay pay slips.
• Certification systems clear ships in port, and any delay means vessels can't be dispatched. As Pacheco puts it, that's "time and, ultimately, money that is held up."
• Cyber resilience was equally critical: as threat landscapes evolved, the company needed tighter controls and better support for compliance with international regulations. And as Tenaris expanded into the cloud, a new gap emerged: on-premises workflows were visible, but cloud processes ran disconnected, with no way to confirm whether a job had finished until someone checked manually.

The solution

Tenaris standardized its operation on Control-M to orchestrate business and technology workflows across hybrid environments, connecting applications, data, and industrial operations under a single platform. The relationship began on the mainframe and evolved alongside the company, expanding to distributed environments and, most recently, the cloud.

Today, Control-M supports more than 18,000 daily processes spanning payroll, human resources, supply chain, industrial systems, finance, security, and health and safety. It manages payments and integrations with financial institutions like JPMorgan Chase and Citi, as well as central organizations within the Techint Group, including Santa María and Exiros.

Recent releases transformed how Tenaris uses the platform. With expanded APIs, connectors, and plugins, Control-M moved from a batch-focused tool to a full workflow orchestrator capable of integrating modern cloud technologies such as Apache NiFi, Apache Airflow, and Databricks.

"The latest versions opened up with the whole API system, integrations, modules, and plugins," says Pacheco. "Today, we're offering Control-M to users not as a closed box, but as an orchestrator, a workflow engine, so the user knows they can build customized solutions, with clear and visible workflows, for their data integration processes."

That shift closed the cloud visibility gap. Tenaris connected the data pipelines feeding its cloud data platform—previously isolated—into the same orchestration and support system as everything else.

"All these chains for the data lake, which were disconnected in the cloud, are now connected with the same platform and support system," says Pacheco. "Everything is under the same umbrella."

The results

By orchestrating its full operation on Control-M, Tenaris connects the data center to the factory floor so every decision is made with accurate, real-time information. Enhanced visibility gives the team a clear, proactive view across every environment—catching anomalies before they reach production. Consolidated information transfer processes deliver greater traceability and security in every critical exchange, while expanded information retention strengthens audit and compliance capabilities, cutting audit cycles from days to hours.

And with automated user and role management, the team simplified administration and strengthened access controls across the operation.

Beyond the metrics, the biggest gain is confidence. Automated payroll runs in the United States now execute behind the scenes every week, with users trusting that files are processed, transported, and delivered without fail.

"It's reliability—the confidence that a user generates a file and knows that it's processed, transported, and doesn't fail," says Pacheco.

The platform has also elevated the role of the team. Once considered a batch engine, Control-M now positions the operations team as a partner in application design and systems architecture—leading with innovation rather than reacting to problems.

"With all this cloud work, it was a huge win, because we had no other visible solution," says Pacheco. "Now we're starting to provide one, we have answers, and they're increasingly asking us about new Control-M functionalities."

Looking ahead

Tenaris has transformed workflow orchestration from a fragmented, manual burden into a strategic advantage that spans mainframe, distributed, and cloud environments. With Control-M, the company achieved the visibility, reliability, and efficiency needed to keep one of the world's largest industrial operations running without interruption.

The partnership continues to grow. Tenaris is adopting a Control-M high-availability solution built on a PostgreSQL cluster to sustain 99.99% service availability and has signed on as one of fewer than 30 companies worldwide selected as early adopters of BMC's emerging products. The team is also exploring AI-driven integrations, testing natural language control of Control-M workflows through model context protocol (MCP).
