Atruvia boosts banking resilience with faster recovery

The banks’ operations depend on our operations. Their resilience depends on our resilience. By modernizing our database recovery capabilities, we support DORA and BaFin rules and we bring even greater resilience to banking in Germany.

Rüdiger Schmitt

System-Engineer and Product Owner for Db2-zOS | Atruvia AG

More than 670 cooperative banks in Germany, representing some 91 million bank accounts, depend on Atruvia for the IT that runs their business.

Atruvia provides the technology and services that enable the latest in banking efficiency, convenience, and reliability—including compliance with the heightened security and recovery regulations of the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA).

As Atruvia prepared for DORA, the company’s System-Engineer and Product Owner for Db2-zOS, Rüdiger Schmitt, says that it faced several common challenges that put pressure on operational continuity and resilience:

  • Rapid ongoing data growth: 15x growth in 10 years in Atruvia’s IBM Db2 environment
  • Increase in database complexity and dependencies: more objects all the time, greater diversity of objects, and multiplying dependencies
  • Workforce demographics: As database experts retire, replacements have less familiarity with the environment

But Schmitt saw an opportunity to address each of these challenges by modernizing the company’s database recovery process. He and his team found a successful solution in BMC AMI Recovery for Db2.

Why BMC AMI?

Schmitt explains that the decision was very clear. The team compared multiple recovery solutions, but they best satisfied their list of requirements with BMC AMI Recovery for Db2. They achieved faster recovery times, they appreciated the unique ability to perform recovery simulations, and they liked how the solution’s recovery management API helps database admins of all experience levels generate jobs and code in recovery situations.

Automated recovery, ease of compliance

Atruvia worked closely with BMC to replace a previous recovery solution with BMC AMI Recovery for Db2 and ensure seamless integration and optimization.

The company has established several valuable capabilities with the solution:

  • Automated recovery tasks and the ability to perform parallel recovery simulations, avoiding disruptions while testing recovery scenarios. “We use recovery simulations to experiment risk free and continually optimize processes for the fastest recoveries,” says Schmitt.

From 56 TB in 8.6 hours...

(Db2 data-recovery rate when Atruvia started using BMC AMI Recovery for Db2, before it began refining processes through simulations and other features.)

To 63 TB in 4.1 hours.

(Less than a year later, with adjustments identified in recovery simulations, and by applying the solution’s sorting utility to sort and optimize processing tasks.)

  • Automated proof of recoverability, based on current production data, to efficiently satisfy DORA as well as BaFin regulations
  • Optimized resource allocation and planning through automated estimation of recovery times

The ultimate result: greater resilience for banks

For Atruvia, automated recoveries and non-disruptive recovery simulations help optimize incident response times and recovery procedures, eliminate the risk of manual errors, and minimize operational impact while strengthening compliance readiness.

For the 670+ banks that Atruvia serves, the improved recovery processes mean even greater resilience and more seamless banking operations.
